to take some of their clerkships in the fourth year and some of their electives in the third year. This will allow students to learn more about specialties and subspecialties before committing for the match process in the fourth year.
The clerkships themselves will undergo some additional changes in length and format. The Psychiatry clerkship, previously six weeks in length now becomes an 8-week Psychiatry/Neurology clerkship. The previously 12-week Internal Medicine clerkship now becomes an 8-week contiguous clerkship with another 4-week block likely taken in the fourth year. OB-Gyn and Family Medicine now become 4-weeks of core experience, again, with some additional flexibility for electives in the fourth year. Vacation time also becomes an option in the third year.
The clinical curriculum will now consist of 22 4-week blocks. While students must complete their 6 required clerkships within the first 14 blocks, this modular approach allow students greater flexibility in planning and an opportunity to focus earlier on areas of interest.
